The international contest Catavinum World Wine & Spirits Competition has announced on Tuesday, February 28, the results of the sixth edition of this international tasting in which wines and spirits from all over the world participate, and which is based in Vitoria. Among the winners are six wines made by Bodegas Yuntero, four white and two red, all distinguished with the silver medal.
In this new edition of Catavinum 3,480 samples, from more than 20 countries, have competed. Only 30% of the participating wines obtain a prize, thus following the rules for the optimal development of competitions established by the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV).
The wines from Bodegas Yuntero that have been awarded silver are: Lazarillo Verdejo 2016 whites, 2016 Sauvignon Blanc Epilogue, 2016 Yuntero Blanco BIO World and 2015 Viognier Epilogue; and the reds Epílogo Roble 2014 and Yuntero Reserva 2010.
The white wine Epilogue Sauvignon Blanc 2016 from Bodegas Yuntero has also received a second silver medal in the category of "White Wines Coupage" of the Contest for the Quality of Bottled and Varietal Wines awarded by the Denomination of Origin La Mancha (DO La Mancha) and whose winners were revealed last Thursday, March 2, in Alcázar de San Juan (Ciudad Real).
The whites of Yuntero
The four white wines awarded with silver in the contest Catavinum They are a clear representation of the diversity of wines, the fruit of white grapes, that Bodegas Yuntero has on the market:
Lazarillo Verdejo 2016. It is a very fresh wine, with Protected Geographical Indication, made 100% with the Verdejo grape variety. With a medium aromatic intensity (notes of freshly cut grass, fennel, citrus and green apple), it leaves a good finish on the palate and a slightly bitter touch, typical of the Verdejo variety.
Epílogo Sauvignon Blanc 2016, awarded both silver medals in Catavinum and in the Quality Awards from DO La ManchaIt is a blend of the Sauvignon (90%) and Moscatel small grain varieties (10%). This DO La Mancha wine is very fresh and of great intensity and aromatic complexity. The exotic notes of the Sauvignon (grapefruit, mango or passion fruit) are interspersed with the muscatel grapes, with a honeyed, smooth and silky sensation on the palate.
World of Yuntero Blanco BIO 2016. This is the organic white of Bodegas Yuntero, made through a careful selection of grapes of the Verdejo variety (75%) and Sauvignon Blanc (25%), grown in vineyards of organic agriculture. It has La Mancha Designation of Origin and is a very fresh wine, with fruity and floral notes, which leaves a long finish on the palate.
Epílogo Viognier 2015. The Viognier grape, originally from Condrieu (Rhône, France), is a rare and rare variety. Bodegas Yuntero worked it for the first time in 2015, launching this wine, a blend of Viognier (90%) and Moscatel (10%) on the market. With DO La Mancha, the nose is very complex, with floral and fruity touches (magician and pineapple). On the palate it is voluminous, smooth and dense, with a very pleasant aftertaste.
Of the six silver medals obtained in the contest Catavinum 2017, two have gone to the most representative reds of Bodegas Yuntero: Epílogo Roble 2014 and Yuntero Reserva 2010.
The Yuntero Reserva red wine is a single-varietal wine – made 100% with Cencibel grapes and selected from the winery's oldest glass vineyards. It is aged in mixed, American and French oak barrels for at least twelve months. All of this gives it a great structure and aromatic complexity with notes of ripe fruits, vanilla and smoke. With great persistence in the mouth, it is a round, smooth and elegant wine, with very sweet tannins.
For its part, the red Epílogo Roble is a combination of the Tempranillo (65%) and Merlot (35%) varieties, the latter giving it the spicy notes typical of this variety. Also aged in mixed American and French oak barrels, it is tasty, well structured, persistent and with a long finish on the palate.
